EDITOR'S NOTE; This article originally appeared on MiltonToday April 15.

David Oladejo has formed meaningful relationships around the world, but often feels at arm’s length in the community he now calls home.

That’s understandable, given his unique situation. But it’s been no less concerning.

“When I first arrived in Milton (in 2022), it was hard to build connections because I would only be around for so long, and I wouldn’t have enough time to fully commit to things,” said the 17-year-old Nigerian immigrant, who’s part of the THINK Global School that’s taken him to Greece, Australia, South Korea and Turkiye as part of the program’s seven-weeks-on-six-weeks-off traveling education schedule. “A little while ago I remember thinking I’ve been here about a year but I don’t really know anyone my age.”

Without the built-in social structure of traditional high school to drawn on, Oladejo went searching for local connections online – not finding much in the way of youth-based platforms specific to Milton.

That discovery – or lack of it – served as the catalyst for MilTeen Magazine, an in-the-works digital forum he plans to launch later this spring.

“The magazine aims to highlight local opportunities and events, feature interviews with inspiring young individuals and showcase the accomplishments of our community’s youth,” said Oladejo, whose endeavour is being funded by THINK Global. “I hope that it becomes a valuable resource, making it easier for young people like me to discover opportunities and feel more connected to the local community.”

While still in the design phase, he’s received a number of contributions – including some art work – and seeks to add to his already curated content.

With hopes of connecting with writers, artists, entrepreneurs and changemakers, Oladejo feels the magazine can be a bridge for young newcomers to Milton, and help create a community forum for all local youth beyond their individual high school environment.

“I want this to be a platform that can bring the youth community together, so they can get to know more about things that are going on here.”

Contributions or suggestions for MilTeen Magazine can be sent to [email protected].
